Director Ceylan to receive presidential movie award

The recipients of the annual President’s Culture and Art Grand Awards for 2009 were announced yesterday.

The President’s Culture and Art Grand Award in Traditional Arts will be given to Uğur Derman, while internationally renowned Cannes winning director Nuri Bilge Ceylan will receive the award in Cinema and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum will be honored with the President’s Culture and Art Grand Award in Culture and Art Institutions.

The Presidency pointed out in a written statement yesterday that the award is given to both Turkish and foreign nationals as well as institutions which make important contributions to Turkish art and culture, aiming to honor them in the name of the state and to encourage such contributions.

The statement also noted that President Abdullah Gül distributes awards in different branches of culture and art each year and that a committee comprising such notable figures as columnist Doğan Hızlan, Professor İskender Pala, Presidential Secretary-General Mustafa İsen, Deputy Presidential Secretary-General Emin Kuz and the president’s adviser, Zeynep Damla Gürel suggests the branches and candidates to be recognized. An awards ceremony will be held at the Çankaya presidential palace; a date is yet to be announced.
