Shoes for the in-between seasons

30 October 2009 / REYHAN YAZICI*,
The rainy, windy days that follow the heat of summer definitely have a strong influence on our choice of shoes. And of course, it's never easy to make the transition from those strappy, open sandals we wear throughout the hot months to the more closed, protective shoes of other seasons.
Checking the weather outside is something we do on a daily basis before getting dressed and deciding on our footwear for the day. It can be confusing and quite important to choose correctly between boots and canvas shoes before leaving home.

When it comes to choosing your footwear for these transitional, in-between seasons, you should keep in mind that comfort comes first. Climate conditions should play the next most important role in your decision process. Think last about seasonal trends in choosing your shoes. Make sure that during these potentially rainy months, your feet will be protected against sudden showers and rainstorms and winds that seem to whip up out of nowhere. That will help you not only feel comfortable but also chic! Combine your own lifestyle needs with seasonal trends to keep your feet warm and dry -- and to avoid becoming a fashion victim!

In style now

* Short boots that end right under the ankle

* Taller suede boots that are lined with wool

* Thick-soled shoes (natural rubber, thick plastic, etc.)

* Leopard and zebra print boots

*  Not only boots with extremely high heels, but also flat boots

* Shoes that feature so much in the way of slouching, ruffles, lace, buttons, ties, colored suede and other detailing that they remind you of blouses

* Shoes with wooden heels and those made of nubuck, soft leather and patent “crocodile” leather

* Fake moccasins and loafers are hugely popular in men's shoes this season and can be paired successfully with jeans and even suits

* Boots that end above the knee

* There is a stunning range of heel types out there this season -- clear, platform, embellished with stones, metal, chains and much more. Heels seem to be shaping fashion designs this season

* Velvet-like materials

What to avoid this season

* Thin soles

* Heels so high you can't stand straight

*  Shoes that take in water or are strappy

* Most canvas shoes (some may be waterproof, you have to check)

* White and other extremely light-colored shoes (except for when you head to private parties)

* Shoes with heels that just don't work this season

Shoes and color

Black is still the most fashionable color this season, not only because it reflects the change to a colder season, but also because of its stylishness.

Colors and styles for in-between seasons

Other than black, look for colors and tones such as purple, dark blue, coffee, gray and dynamic metal shades this season. And if you really want to keep your fingers on the pulse of this fall season, I recommend a pair of suede boots, either ending at the ankle or above the knee. There are boots in many styles and lengths this season. And there are the flat boots out there for those who are definitely not fans of heels.

These elegant styles look great not only with skirts but also with jeans. Ankle boots are usually designed with higher heels. Buy yourself a pair in a darker color, so they will look great with your classic professional wardrobe.
