This time around, on the celebration of the republic’s 86th anniversary, our debates over “secular republic supporters versus nationalists” occur with a more East-West setting.
On the one hand, Turkey is advancing down the “EU road” on the foundation of democracy, the civilianization of society, pluralism, rights and basic freedoms. It is searching for peaceful, democratic solutions to the Kurdish problem. And no matter how problematic and turbulent this search may be, Turkey is working hard to develop democratic standards. At the same time, old coup and interventionist mentalities are being abandoned. We need to see our country’s energy used more on increasing the general life standards and societal prosperity of Turkey than on pursuing (and prosecuting) undemocratic actions.
