Press Roundup

30 October 2009 / ,
Mahyas (lights strung between minarets) reading “The republic is a virtue” were hung between the minarets of several historic mosques in İstanbul yesterday despite a controversy over using mahyas to display political messages.
Radikal: “Enough is enough Baykal,” read the headline of the daily’s main story yesterday, which criticized the leader of Republican People’s Party (CHP), Deniz Baykal, who claimed that a recently discovered military plot to destroy the government was a fabrication even though the original copy of the document detailing the plot has been found. Baykal criticized the timing of the leakage of the document to the media as well as the military officer who leaked the document. “Why has this document been kept for four-and-a-half months [the photocopy of the document was first discovered in June]? What lies behind this timing?” Baykal asked.

Taraf: “Erdoğan to tell Başbuğ to remove 1st army commander,” the daily reported in the headline of its lead story yesterday, claiming that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who will discuss the recently discovered military plot with Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ, will tell the military chief to remove 1st Army Corps Commander Gen. Hasan Iğsız from his post as he is suspected to be the figure behind the preparation of the plot. Erdoğan will also ask Başbuğ to dismiss all the military officers who were involved in the preparation of the plot, the daily said.

Yeni Şafak: In its top story yesterday, the daily quoted remarks from President Abdullah Gül, who said everyone in Turkey [including members of the military] should give an account of their actions in the wake of the discovery of the military plot. “The Constitution, laws and universal democratic standards are very obvious. It is necessary for everyone in this country to give an account of their actions and to remain within the boundaries of their authority and the limits of the democratic state of law,” Gül said on Wednesday while returning from an official visit to Serbia.
