Top Turkish Cypriot diplomat says Christofias asking for unilateral concessions

27 October 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, LEFKOŞA
Turkish Cypriot foreign minister criticized Tuesday Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias for asking Turkey for giving unilateral concessions for a settlement of the Cyprus issue.

"Christofias thinks that the solution of the Cyprus problem can be achieved by having Turkey give unilateral concessions, a wrong attitude which he needs to quit at once," Hüseyin Özgürgün said in  written statement.

Özgürgün said any settlement of the issue should rest on the parameters defined by the United Nations and on the principles which had been agreed on by the Turkish and Greek Cypriots sides to secure political equality and a new partnership of equal status of the two founding states.

The Turkish Cypriot foreign minister also accused the Greek Cypriot side and Greece of "failing to show commitment and good will" for a settlement.
