Turkish FM: We won't let civilians die in the region

26 October 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Monday that Turkey would not let civilians die in the region.

If something goes wrong, Turkey -- as a leader country in the region -- will not remain silent, added Davutoğlu who spoke to Al-Jazeera TV in Pakistan.

Davutoğlu said that political dialogue, mutual economic dependence, more economic relations and a multicultural harmony were necessary to solve problems and restore peace in the region.

Upon a question on relations with Israel, Davutoğlu said that Turkey-Israel relations should not be limited to a certain period of time. He added that if there was a positive momentum, Turkey's relations would be good with every country, but if something went wrong, Turkey would not remain silent towards what was happening.

Davutoğlu noted that if similar things happened in Gaza in the future, Turkey would show a similar reaction. He added that Turkey would not let civilians die in Israel or any other country in the region.

When asked "do you think Turkey's role is mediation between Israel and Syria?", Davutoğlu said that he did not think so, adding that if a country wanted to be a mediator, both sides should ask for it. He said that Turkey did not want to impose this on Israel and Syria.

Commenting on Turkey's relations with Iran and Iran's nuclear activities, Davutoğlu said that Turkey was against nuclear weapons in any place. He said that Turkey supported development of nuclear technology for peaceful means, and this was every country's right. He also said that Turkey wanted a region which was purified from nuclear weapons.
