Mid-table Mersin İdmanyurdu, popularly known as Mersin İY, showed Bank Asya League 1 title contender Kartalspor no respect whatsoever as it beat the visiting İstanbul side 2-0 in a thrilling week 10 encounter at Mersin’s Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadium on Saturday.
Going into this match Kartalspor was fourth in the standings with 17 points, while Mersin İY was a distant 10th with 13 from nine outings. Hence the general consensus of most soccer pundits was a victory for Kartalspor, and the İstanbul side was the bookmakers’ favorite. But after referee Taner Gizlenci blew the whistle for kickoff, Mersin İY proved beyond doubt that soccer is a game played not on paper but on the pitch as the Mersin lads took the game to Kartalspor.
Mersin İY dominated play in midfield but could not find the killer touch until the 43rd minute, when defender Ahmet Çağıran scored to break the deadlock and striker Caner Ağça found the back of the net in the second minute of added time (92nd) to put the match beyond reach. Mersin İdmanyurdu earned three precious points, while Kartalspor went home with nothing.
