Cinema and history meet in İstanbul in December

The 12th edition of the İstanbul International Meeting of Cinema and History, an annual showcase of cinematic works with historical and intellectual weight, is set to take place between Dec. 11 and 17 this year with a theme of European cultures meeting in İstanbul in an attempt to explore the richness of the common culture of Turkey and Europe.
Organized by the Turkish Foundation of Cinema and Audiovisual Culture (TÜRSAK), the festival will bestow its honorary award on internationally renowned Turkish pianist İdil Biret, who has sold more than 2 million albums worldwide and whose wide romantic repertoire is internationally acclaimed. Biret will accept her award during the opening night of the festival. Part of a documentary, the production of which is still under way and which tells the story of Biret, will be shown on opening night.
This year's festival will showcase movies that have been acclaimed at such internationally renowned film festivals as Cannes, Berlin and Toronto, and the festival will cover themes such as the meeting of European cultures, new discoveries and human rights.
The movies will be shown at the Alkazar movie theater and the French Cultural Center in İstanbul's Beyoğlu district. While the tickets for movie showings at Alkazar will be priced at TL 4 for students and TL 5 for others, the showings at the French Cultural Center will be free of charge.
The festival program will be announced later.
