İstanbul's Ümraniye Municipality on Thursday launched a campaign to inform the public about swine flu and ways to protect against it.
The campaign involves experts visiting schools to educate students and teachers about the H1N1 virus and setting up stands on streets to inform passers-by about the disease. Four stands are to be set up in various locations and each will be staffed by a doctor and nurse.

In November, the İstanbul Provincial Health Directorate and the Ümraniye health and education directorates plan to hold seminars in both district schools and cultural centers to explain ways the public can avoid contracting the virus.

Speaking to the first group of students to be informed about the virus as part of the campaign, Ümraniye Mayor Hasan Can said: “Unfortunately swine flu is a disease that is spreading throughout the world and has reached Turkey, as well. Although information on the disease is limited in Turkey, the Ümraniye Municipality will carry out its responsibilities to inform the public through this campaign in which we hope to explain methods to protect oneself from the disease. Our aim at this moment is to reach out to 100,000 families living in Ümraniye.” The mayor added that he believes the campaign, organized in cooperation with the İstanbul health and education directorates, will be a success.
