New ‘genocide' resolution introduced in US senate

23 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Less then two weeks after Turkey and Armenia signed two landmark protocols outlining the restoration of bilateral ties and the opening of their shared border in Zurich on Oct. 10, a new resolution for official recognition of Armenian genocide allegations has been introduced in the US Senate.

The resolution was introduced on Wednesday by Democrat Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Republican Senator John Ensign of Nevada, reported the English-language online journal The Armenian Weekly.

“The resolution introduced today calls upon the president to ensure that the foreign policy of the United States reflects appropriate understanding and sensitivity concerning issues related to human rights, ethnic cleansing, and genocide documented in the United States record relating to the Armenian Genocide. The resolution includes extensive findings from past US hearings, resolutions, and presidential statements on the Armenian Genocide from 1916 through the present, as well as references to statements by international bodies and organizations,” The Armenian Weekly said.

The resolution is expected to be sent to the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. If adopted by the committee, it may be put on agenda of the Senate. There are already two resolutions endorsing the genocide claims pending in the US Congress. In 2007, despite pleas from the Bush administration, the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs passed a nonbinding resolution that described the events of 1915 as genocide. Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives and an ardent supporter of the Armenian claims, has so far not brought the resolution to the House floor.
