France and Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery is likely to miss next month’s World Cup playoffs against Ireland. Ribery, who didn’t feature in Bayern’s 2-1 loss against Bordeaux in the Champions League on Wednesday, has been hampered by left knee tendinitis this season.
According to L’Equipe newspaper, Ribery saw knee specialist Jean-Henri Jaeger in Strasbourg on Wednesday and learned he will be out at least for one more month. France will face Ireland in a two-leg playoff on Nov. 14 and 18 for a spot in next year’s soccer showcase in South Africa. “We want to help him to recover from this injury,” Bayern coach Louis Van Gaal said. “But I can’t tell you how long he will be sidelined. It could last one month, but it’s not for sure.” Ribery already missed France’s last two World Cup qualifiers against the Faeroes Islands and Austria.
