Troubled Storm takes on Kayseri Tigers in Trabzon

23 October 2009 / OKAN UDO BASSEY , İSTANBUL
The Trabzon Black Sea Storm, fighting an uphill battle to prevent their 2009-10 season from turning into a complete fiasco, have to beat the Kayseri Anatolian Tigers when they meet at Trabzon’s Hüseyin Avni Aker Stadium this evening.
The Storm is in a pitiable state going in the week 10 Turkcell Super League home match against Kayserispor this evening. Trabzonspor has been unable to withstand the pull of gravity this season and so has already been eliminated from the UEFA Europa League and also lies a disappointing ninth in the 17-team Super League standings with only 12 points from three wins, three draws and three losses in nine outings.

On Sunday the Storm was beaten 4-3 by Galatasaray in a thrilling match at İstanbul’s Ali Sami Yen Stadium. The seven-goal thriller gave soccer fans their money’s worth, but added to the woes of Trabzon’s embattled Belgian coach Hugo

Broos, whose days at the club appear to be numbered.

Berlin-born midfielder Zafer Yelen, acquired from Germany’s Hansa Rostock last season, was absent from this week’s training sessions because he underwent surgery on his right knee recently.

Slightly injured Argentine midfielder Gustavo Colman, arguably the best player on the Trabzonspor squad, trained lightly with the team on Wednesday and is expected to start for the Storm this evening. Without Colman, who scored two goals against Galatasaray on Sunday, the Storm would be badly weakened. Guinea striker Ibrahim Yattara, who has fully recovered from injury, has said he is ready for action if called up for duty by the coach.

But the Storm, though playing at home, faces a Herculean task against the rampaging Kayserispor, which is placed fourth in the standings behind Bursaspor, Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.

Tolunay Kafkas’ Kayseri drubbed Ankaragücü 3-0 at home last weekend, a timely warning to friends and foes alike in the league that the Tigers mean real business this season.

The Storm may have strong home crowd support this evening, but it’s the Tigers who are the bookmakers’ favorite. Kickoff is at 8 p.m., and the referee will be Cüneyt Çakır.
