Gas price climbs to record TL 3.36 per liter

22 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Fuel distributing companies raised the price of a liter of 95-octane unleaded gas by between Kr 8 and Kr 10 yesterday, bringing the price to a historic high of TL 3.36 per liter.

The previous high a liter of gas had reached was TL 3.34 per liter, on Aug. 6. The Energy Market Regulatory Agency (EPDK) intervened in the market in June to set a price ceiling in an attempt to protect consumers’ rights and force distributors to abide by competition rules.

However, it canceled the price ceiling after three months, with virtually no success, mainly due to the government’s decision to increase taxes on fuel products by up to Kr 20 per liter, which almost nullified the drop in prices following the EPDK’s intervention.

With yesterday’s increases, a liter of 95-octane unleaded gas rose from TL 3.25-3.27 to TL 3.33-3.36 in İstanbul and Ankara, depending on the company, and from TL 3.24-3.26 to TL 3.34-3.35 in İzmir.
