108 buildings around the water, belonging to 40 companies, have been determined to be unlicensed. These unlicensed buildings were heavily damaged in the September floods in İstanbul. In the flooding experienced on Sept. 8-9 in İstanbul, many people lost their lives mainly because of the illegal constructions built around the Ayamama stream. The stream overflowed during torrential downpours, resulting in deadly floods in parts of the city.
Municipal police teams have delivered necessary official documents to 25 companies so far, covering 53 unlicensed constructions including parking areas, barracks, storehouses and reinforced concrete buildings located around the river. The companies were informed that if the owners do not demolish their buildings, operations will be launched by municipal crews to demolish the structures. The cost of destroying the structures will be the responsibility of the owners of the buildings.
Ayamama stream goes through a line of districts starting from Başakşehir, Bağcılar, Küçükçekmece and Bahçelievler, reaching Bakırköy, one of the most crowded districts of İstanbul, and finally empties into the Marmara Sea. It has a length of 42 km, 8.5 of which is between the TEM and E-5 highways, which caused great dangers for the city during the September rains.
