Motor vehicle registrations soar in August thanks to tax incentives

Thanks to a boost in demand for cars amidst tax incentives, the number of registered motor vehicles increased in August over the previous month, figures released on Wednesday by the General Directorate of Security and the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) showed.

In the eighth month of the year, 64,325 new vehicles were registered, an increase of 28 percent over July numbers. On the other hand, the number of newly registered vehicles was still much lower compared to the same month of the previous year.

The number of motor vehicles that hit the roads in August 2008 was 26.5 percent higher than the number in August of this year.

Automobiles had a 43.9 percent share in these new registrations with 28,235 units. Motorcycles came in second with 16,071 units and a 25 percent share, followed by pickup trucks with 24.3 percent and 15,639 units. Tractors followed with a 2.1 percent share in new registrations with 1,377 units. The total number of minibuses, buses, trucks and special-purpose motor vehicles registered in August accounted for 4.7 percent of the total figure, with 3,003 units.

The number of vehicles on the road have increased by 378,596 during the first eight months of this year, when. 496,491 new vehicles were registered and 117,895 old cars were retired from the road. İstanbul had the lion's share of vehicle registrations with 32.7 percent. Ankara was second with 8 percent, followed by İzmir (5.9 percent), Antalya (4.3 percent) and Bursa (3.4 percent).
