Press Roundup

21 October 2009 / ,
A trailer carrying cooking oil and margarine overturned on the D-100 highway in İstanbul's Avcılar district in the early hours of Tuesday causing the road to be closed to traffic for several hours due to its treacherous surface.
Taraf: “Republic's turning point of peace,” the daily said in the headline of its main story yesterday, claiming that the most critical point for the peaceful solution of the Kurdish problem has been overcome as the surrender of a group of outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members at the Habur border gate on Monday boosted hopes of peace. The 34-member group was made to wait at customs for two-and-a-half hours before undergoing health checks. A senior state official, speaking to the daily, said there needs to be determination to achieve permanent peace. “Not every problem can be solved by laws. Those returning from the mountains should be seen from this perspective,” he said.

Radikal: “Critical beginning,” read the headline of the daily's lead story yesterday, which reported on the return of 34 PKK members to Turkey on Monday. Thousands of people waited for the return of the PKK members at the border gate. Four prosecutors who were granted special authority carried out the legal proceedings for the PKK members while their lawyers waited. After an interrogation, the PKK members were released, the daily reported.

Star: In a front-page story yesterday, the daily said it was the mothers who were most happy over the return of some PKK members to Turkey on Monday. Mahiye Aşar, whose daughter Hamiyet Dinçer joined the ranks of the PKK 19 years ago although she was married and had one son, expressed her gratitude for the officials who paved the way for the return of the PKK members. “I have waited for my daughter's return for years. I hope God's blessings will be on the people who have contributed to the Kurdish initiative process. I hope we will no longer see the funerals of both soldiers and PKK members.”
