In a statement, Wexler said he was proud to have helped Barack Obama on issues regarding Middle Eastern politics during his election campaign, adding that the presidency of the Center for Middle East Peace and Economic Cooperation will provide him a unique opportunity to work for the establishment of peace in the Middle East.
"Those who know me, and those who have followed my career know that one of my overriding passions has been my work on the Foreign Affairs Committee helping to strengthen and preserve the unbreakable bond between the United States and Israel, and working toward a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East between Israelis and Palestinians and between Israel and the Arab world. Additionally, I have made a special effort to improve congressional relations with key allies in the Muslim world by founding the Turkey and Indonesia caucuses," Wexler said in the statement announcing his resignation.
US-Turkish caucus welcomes 100th member
The US Congressional Caucus on US-Turkish Relations and Turkish Americans reached a membership milestone this week with the additions of Rep. John B. Shadegg (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim member of Congress, to its fold, bringing its total membership to 100.
The head of the Turkish Coalition of America (TCA), Lincoln McCurdy, stated that the 100th member is a milestone for the expansion of Turkish-American relations and for helping Turkish-Americans participate in the democratic process.
The Turkish Caucus is comprised of members from 34 states. Texas, with 13 representatives, has the most members in the caucus, followed by North Carolina with 10 members, Pennsylvania with six and Florida with five.
The co-chairpersons of the caucus are Wexler, Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-Ky.) and Rep. Kay Granger (R-Texas).
A full list of the members of the caucus can be seen on the Web site http://www.tc-america.org/.
