Albaraka Türk Participation Bank General Manager Adnan Büyükdeniz passed away of colon cancer on Monday night at the age of 51 after four years of treatment failed to keep the disease at bay. He had been hospitalized after his condition worsened following last Eid al-Fitr.

Büyükdeniz was an important figure in the Turkish banking sector. Born in 1958 in Adana, Büyükdeniz was a graduate of Boğaziçi University's economics department. He earned a master's degree from the London School of Economics and completed his PhD in the money and banking department at İstanbul University. Starting his career as an economics researcher at the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen's Association (TÜSİAD), he continued as a research and marketing deputy manager at Albaraka Türk. Büyükdeniz worked as a foreign affairs manager, deputy general manager and head deputy general manager at the same institution before being promoted to general manager of Albaraka Turk six years ago.

In a written statement released on Monday, Albaraka Türk announced that a doyen of participation banking has been lost. Drawing attention to the appreciation Büyükdeniz gained from people of all strata, the bank expressed its condolences to his family and friends. Büyükdeniz's funeral ceremony is set to take place at the Marmara University Seminary Mosque today following the afternoon prayer. He will be buried in Yeni Çekmeköy cemetery.

Married with three children, Büyükdeniz worked as an executive board member at a number of banks and investment fund institutions abroad. He had also given numerous lectures on courses like “Money Theory and Policy,” and “International Economics,” at Marmara University between 1992 and 2000. Along with several academic and other publishing awards, Büyükdeniz had won the Economy Award from the Milliyet daily in 1992 with his book, “Interest Policies in Turkey.”

Albaraka's Chief Deputy General Manager Fahrettin Yahşi will undertake the top position by proxy until the board appoints a new manager.

Büyükdeniz was offered the top spot at Halk Bank in 2005, but had to turn down the offer due to his worsening health. His name was also considered by the Cabinet for the central bank governorship in 2006 but then-President Ahmet Necdet Sezer vetoed the Cabinet decision to appoint him.

Commenting on his death, Ziraat Bankası General Manager Can Akın Çağlar said Turkish banking has lost one of its biggest and most successful names. "We have been following his health problems for a long time, phase by phase. We were glad initially when he responded positively to treatment. But today, we are in deep sorrow after losing him," he said.

Turkish Banks Association (TBB) General Secretary Ekrem Keskin recalled his 30-year friendship with Büyükdeniz. "We studied monetary economics together for years and collaborated as experts at TÜSİAD. He was not only a quality banker but also was a very respectable human," he underlined.

Bank Asya General Manager Ünal Kabaca also sent his condolences and wished him mercy from Allah. “He always avoided extravagancy in any part of his life. He always respected the rights of others and had almost no problems with others,” Kabaca remembered his friend. Türkiye Finans General Manager Yunus Nacar was also very sorry to have lost a friend like Büyükdeniz, noting: “He was a young person with a bright future ahead. His place will not be easily filled.”
