Historic building damaged by fire

20 October 2009 / BAYRAM EMİR , İSTANBUL
A fire that broke out on Sunday night at a sanitarium on Heybeliada, an island in the Marmara Sea off the coast of İstanbul, was extinguished yesterday, inflicting extensive damage to the historic structure.
The fire started on the roof of the wooden building and spread throughout the entire Heybeliada Sanitarium because of an inadequate number of firefighters on the island.

Additional firefighting teams from İstanbul's Maltepe, Kadıköy, Kartal and Büyükada districts helped to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby forest. The building sustained significant damage from the fire. The Heybeliada Sanitarium was established in 1924 on the orders of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. It was the first tuberculosis hospital in Turkey and has not been used in the last four years.
