Efes Pilsen begins new TBL season with a bang

Efes Pilsen, last season's champion, beat Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi 92-67 in their men's Beko Basketball League (TBL) opener on Sunday.
Initially leading the match after Asım Pars and James Baron scored points, Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi fell behind, overtaken by Efes Pilsen players Kerem Gönlüm, Preston Shumpert and Bostjan Nachbar's play. While Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi did at one point reduce the score difference to three points, the first period closed in favor of Efes Pilsen with 21-29 as Efes Pilsen widened the gap with three-pointers.
In the other TBL match on Sunday, Banvit beat visiting Erdemir 71-68 in a thrilling encounter.
Fenerbahçe Ülker, last season's runner-up in the men's Beko Turkish Basketball League, trounced Kepez Belediye 75-76 in a one-sided match at İstanbul's Abdi İpekçi Sports Hall on Saturday.
Beşiktaş Cola Turka, which has not won the basketball league title in 34 long years, also began the new season with a 77-68 victory over Darüşşafaka, popularly known as Daçka.
Pınar Karşıyaka gave TBL newcomer Bornova Belediye a good basketball lesson with a resounding 89-68 victory in İzmir, while a revamped Antalya Büyükşehir Belediye upset visiting Ankara side Türk Telekom 67-62. Tofaş, another newcomer, also won 89-72 at home over Aliağa Belediye.
