[EXPAT VOICE] Too much to ask for?

20 October 2009 / STEPHEN GATES,
I came to Turkey back in 2002 and immediately fell in love with the culture and the strong traditions that people live by. At that time, the economy was just at the end of a major crisis, but as time went on the economy grew and Turkey became a place of interest for foreign companies to look at.
Thousands of new jobs were created, and at last Turkey was an export country as good as any other. Turkey was proud of having one of the youngest populations in the world. As we all know, the young are the future, the generation that could really put Turkey on the world map and in global markets.

Before I go any further, I am not a politically minded person. My view is, whoever is in power, it is their responsibility to do the best for the people and the country. I am a professional teacher with a degree and have been lucky enough to teach many different classes of student, from the very rich to the very poor.

I have seen the Turkish education system go from bad to worse in just a matter of three or four years. Turkey has the Student Selection Examination (ÖSS), better known as the university entrance exam. The curriculum taught at school is not enough to pass this exam, so families are put under huge financial pressure to send their children to private schools for extra tuition.

This surely tells anyone that the education system has collapsed and, as usual, nothing is being done to rectify it. At the end of the day, who cares? The people with the money get their kids educated and the poor kids fall by the wayside. I could go on and on regarding how this country has just dumped the average Turks in all manner of ways, but what's the point? As the old saying goes, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Reading the newspaper today, I smiled to myself because if there was an election tomorrow, you guessed it, the people would still have the same party to run this country.

I am the only one that can see the unbelievable potential of this country. We should be one of the leading economies in this part of the world. We have so much to offer and in so many ways, but our government seems to think otherwise.

They would rather spend their time on pursuing tax money from a newspaper that will not be told what to write. And before anyone says anything, yes I know that one company should not be involved in the media and have business ventures at the same time, but if the government could spend the same amount of time it does pursuing this media group on vital issues regarding the textile and automotive industries that needs help now, thousands of workers could get back to work.

I will say no more, but, hey, the few paragraphs of me venting my thoughts is just me being an Englishman who loves this country. I have never in my life met and lived with people who are so proud and truly love their Türkiye. All of us living in this country just want what's best for it.

Is that too much to ask for?
