A sincerity test for the PKK

20 October 2009 / BUGÜN ADEM YAVUZ ARSLAN,
Today Turkey will experience one of the most important turning points in the democratic initiative process thus far.
Heeding a call from Abdullah Öcalan on İmralı, a group of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members are slated to “return home” through Silopi from camps in Kandil and Mahmur. What we have before us is a situation with no foreseeable end because the PKK’s record is quite bad on this front. What we witness today with the PKK is really a complete test of sincerity. If the people chosen from the camps in Kandil and Mahmur are truly ones who will finally be able to eat dinner in their own homes, people who are sent home before becoming involved in any crimes, then the PKK will have passed the first stage of this sincerity test. If, on the other hand, the people picked to return to their homes from the mountains are ones whose records are already stained, then this will be nothing more than a direct step taken toward sabotaging the whole process.
