Mehmet Baran, 14, and Mazlim Ay, 16, are two students from the southeastern province of Diyarbakır who work at a sawn timber factory when not in school in order to cover their educational expenses.
Zaman: A front-page story reported remarks yesterday from President Abdullah Gül, who said the fight against terrorism cannot solely be carried out through military means. Speaking on a TV program broadcast by TRT 1 on Sunday, Gül said the state is making efforts, many of which are not noticed by the public, to solve Turkey’s terrorism problem. Inviting main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal to attend National Security Council (MGK) meetings, Gül said the fight against terrorism is being extensively discussed at MGK meetings. “No state can show tolerance to those carrying weapons in their hands. The fight against terrorism cannot solely be carried out through weapons. The state is involved in many activities that are not known to the people,” Gül said.

Vatan: “Good things are happening,” the daily of the top story said yesterday, reporting that a group of individuals from the Kandil and Mahmur camps in northern Iraq, where outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members are positioned, will turn themselves in in Silopi on Monday. The group is to be met by many pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) supporters and DTP leaders Ahmet Türk and Emine Ayna, the daily said.

Star: “Super prosecutor!” read the headline of the daily’s lead story yesterday, which said that a majority of the 2,407 cases filed in April against journalists covering the case into Ergenekon, a clandestine crime network with alleged links within the state and suspected of plotting to topple the government, were all filed by Bakırköy Prosecutor Ali Çakır. The record number of cases filed by Çakır against journalists covering Ergenekon has brought his relations with Ergenekon suspects to the agenda, the daily said.
