Eurasia Marathon excitement marred by suicide tragedy

A man who was a participant in the 31st International Eurasia Marathon on Sunday jumped off the Bosporus Bridge during the event. Search efforts are still under way to retrieve his body.

The man, whose name was withheld, reportedly committed suicide by jumping off the bridge at around 10 a.m. Sunday's race started on the Asian side, crossed the Bosporus and Golden Horn bridges, passed under the Valens Aqueduct on the way to the Marmara Sea and finished on the European side at the Hippodrome, one of the oldest racetracks in the world, situated in the historic district of Sultanahmet.

Adilo Kasime Roba of Ethiopia, who was the winner of last year's International Eurasia Marathon, won the men's event in this year's race as well. Roba finished with a time of 2:12:14.

Nearly 7,000 local and foreign athletes participated in the 42-kilometer event, the 15 kilometer race and the fun run, which began on the Anatolian side of the city and ended on the European side. Men's event champion Roba of Ethiopia won a prize of $50,000. Faisal Bader Shebto of Qatar came in second at 2:12:54, while Joseph Kahugu of Kenya was third with 2:13:32.

Nearly 7,000 domestic and foreign athletes participated in the 42-kilometer International Eurasia Marathon held on Sunday. The race started from the Anatolian side of İstabul and ended on the European side.

In the women's event Bizunesh Urgesa of Ethiopia won with a time of 2:32:45. Another Ethiopian, Ashu Kasim, came in second at 2:34:54 and Svetlana Semova of Russia took third with 2:37:04.

Last year, Lishan Yigezu Fanta of Ethiopia came in second at 2:11:37, while Iaroslav Musinchi of Moldova was third with 2:11:43 in the men's event. In the women's event, Nailya Yulamanova of Russia won at 2:30:17, while another Russian, Yuliya Gromova, came in second at 2:31:36 and Mehtap Sızmaz of Turkey took third with 2:3:17.

Taking place for the past 30 years, the Eurasia Marathon aims for friendship and peace. Well-known athletes such as Ian Thompson and Terry Mitchell previously participated in the Eurasia Marathon.
