19 October 2009 / SABAH MAHMUT ÖVÜR,
The upcoming meeting between [Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz] Baykal and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is very important because it will become clear if Turkey's conservative democratic and social democratic parties will publicize their views on the Kurdish issue.
At this stage a Kurdish report prepared in 1990 and endorsed by CHP leader Baykal is attracting a great deal of attention. Most probably, this report will be extensively discussed at the meeting. A while ago, I talked to an experienced politician who contributed much to that report. He made an assessment on current developments: “It is only natural that social democratic politics assume the lead in resolving such a delicate issue. However, the passive and ineffective stance of CHP leader Baykal and the party leadership caused great disappointment. Social democrats do not deserve this.”
