‘Kurdish workshop investigated for constitutional violation’

16 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A public prosecutor's office in Ankara has launched an investigation into a workshop held at the Police Academy in Ankara in August under the auspices of Interior Minister Beşir Atalay, the Milliyet daily wrote on Thursday.

According to the report, the investigation came after a criminal complaint which alleged the workshop violated the Constitution. A large number of academics, journalists and intellectuals gathered at the Police Academy in early August to discuss the Kurdish question and its potential solutions. The workshop was organized by Atalay, who is coordinating the government's work on the Kurdish initiative.

The investigation came in the wake of a criminal complaint recently filed by an unidentified individual at a public prosecutor's office in İstanbul. The complaint claimed that the Police Academy workshop had violated the Constitution as it opened fundamental principles enshrined in the Constitution up to debate. The prosecutor's office in İstanbul said the complaint fell outside its jurisdiction as the workshop was held in Ankara and transferred the complaint to a prosecutor's office in Ankara.

The Ankara office opened a probe into the workshop and asked the Ankara Police Department to provide detailed information on the event. Among the information requested were details on sessions held behind closed doors. The prosecutor's office will decide on the future of the investigation based on the information provided.

The government has been working for the last few months on a comprehensive plan to improve democratic standards in Turkey and solve the country's chronic problems through peaceful methods. Among those problems is the long-standing Kurdish question.
