The Eyüp Board of Education hosted a five-day study program in conjunction with the European Unions's Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) titled the “Analysis of All Actors by Learning and Teaching Communities” between Oct. 5 and 9.

Ten participants from seven EU countries -- Poland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Slovakia, the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic – were involved in the study program. Participants included teachers, school principals, teacher trainers and education inspectors.

During the visit similarities and differences between the education systems of Turkey and Europe were examined.

The program is regarded as a forerunner for future exchange programs.

The participants not only learned about the education system in Turkey but also gained insight into Turkish culture, attending workshops on Turkish ebru, or marbling, and folk dances.

As part of the program participants visited primary, secondary and vocational schools and universities, where they mingled with students and observed teachers. They also called on the Eyüp Municipality, the Eyüp Board of Education and the İstanbul Education Directorate.

At the end of the program the participants reported on their experiences for educational authorities. They also said in their assessment that they had gotten to know more about Turkish culture and hospitality and had experienced the natural beauty of İstanbul.

Briton Rachel McKinney, the group reporter, summed it up, saying: “European countries have misconceptions about the education system in Turkey. In reality it is in fact a modern system comparable to any EU country. As hosts you've provided us with a rich experience. Not only have we met teachers and parents, we have also experienced Turkish culture."
