Canan was returning to İstanbul by bus after visiting Yalova with his friends Professor Ali Rıza Abay and Hasan Candan. While waiting for the service vehicle after getting off the bus, Canan noticed that he had lost his mobile phone. His friends phoned the bus company office to ask for help finding Canan's phone.
Later, Canan left his friends without informing them. After Abay and Candan noticed Canan's absence, they looked for him before finding Canan crushed beneath a shuttle bus.
According to statements from bystanders, while waiting for the shuttle Canan saw the bus in which he forgot his phone and started to run after it in an attempt to reclaim his mobile phone. But he fell down and was run over by a shuttle bus driven by Erol Çakır.
Canan's body was extracted by emergency response teams and firefighters. Although it was apparent that Canan had died during the accident, his friends insisted on bringing Canan to the Kartal Teaching and Research Hospital. Canan's family came to the hospital after learning of the accident.
Police officers have started an investigation into the incident, and Çakır was brought to the Sancaktepe Police Station and taken into custody.
Canan is to be buried today at Eyüp Sultan Cemetery after a ceremony at the mosque of the Marmara University theology department.
Following a stint teaching at Erzurum's Atatürk University, Canan lived in France for many years. His translation of the Kütüb-i Sitte (the collection of six hadith books considered admissible in Islam) from Arabic to Turkish is considered one of his biggest contributions to theological literature.
Hayrettin Karaman, the renowned professor of Islamic law and a friend of Canan's, called the passing of Canan a huge loss but noted that death is a step closer to reaching God. Another professor at Marmara University, Ahmet Yücel, praised Canan's good relations with his students and colleagues. Highlighting his theological efforts, Yücel noted that Canan termed the hostility against religion an illness and fought against it.
