According to a statement issued by the İstanbul Police Department, anti-smuggling operations resulted in the discovery of a truck in Beylikdüzü carrying 10,500 cartons of smuggled cigarettes yesterday. The customs value of the cigarettes was nearly TL 500,000. The smuggling ring was allegedly headed by S.A., while military officer Ç.C. reportedly ensured the cigarettes got through checkpoints.
24 illegal migrants caught trying to transit Turkey
EDİRNE Twenty-four illegal migrants, originally from Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia and Iraq, were discovered by gendarmerie teams yesterday during routine patrols in Edirne’s Meriç and Keşan districts. Lacking the necessary travel documents, they were sent to the Edirne Police Department’s Passport and Foreigners’ Unit for processing ahead of deportation.
Police seize 205 kilograms of heroin in Ağrı
AĞRI Two trucks were stopped at the Ağrı Regional Traffic Checkpoint yesterday when workers there became suspicious at the sight of the two old trucks which had new baggage compartments. The vehicles were examined by teams assisted by a drug-sniffing dog, resulting in the discovery of 411 packages of heroin, weighing a total of 205 kilograms. Truck drivers S.A. and V.A. were taken into custody in connection with the find.
Atatürk Airport fire drill conducted successfully
İSTANBUL Teams from the State Airports Management General Directorate (DHMİ) Firefighting Directorate carried out fire and rescue drills at İstanbul Atatürk Airport yesterday. The drill, performed under International Civil Aviation Organization regulations, involved a simulation of a plane landing on its belly and bursting into flames. Three tons of gas, 200 liters of motor oil and 200 liters of fuel were set ablaze to create the flames. The exercise cost nearly TL 10,000, and airport officials reported it a success.
