Coach Broos aims to rein in Galatasaray with anti-football
Then maybe out of desperation or exasperation or a combination of both, Broos said his primary aim on Sunday will be to stop Galatasaray from scoring. “There are going to be many good players on the pitch, and so our No. 1 goal will be to rein in the Galatasaray attacking force,” he stated.
“They [Galatasaray] have players like Arda Turan, Harry Kewell, Milan Baros and Abdul Kader Keita. We have to rein in these players and then go for the goals. I forgot Shabani Nonda and Elano Blumer. I think my rival [Galatasaray coach Frank Rijkaard] may go for Nonda instead of Keita,” he added.
In a nutshell, Broos' game plan on Sunday will be based on anti-football or ugly football or catenaccio. Therefore Trabzon's main purpose will not be to score but to prevent Galatasaray from scoring. And this is a defeatist strategy as we understand it.
The Galatasaray Lions have been all over the place in their last two league games, drawing one and losing one. But while they may seemingly be down, they are by no means out and therefore if Broos resorts to negative football he might be plotting Trabzonspor's downfall. The simple reason is that attacking soccer more often than not prevails over anti-football.
If Arda, Kewell, Baros, Keita, Nonda and the rest can find their rhythm at İstanbul's Ali Sami Stadium, Broos' ugly football strategy could boomerang. Trabzonspor, with 12 points from eight outings, trails leader Fenerbahçe by 12 points and Galatasaray by seven. And if Trabzon drops points on Sunday, Broos will have no other excuses to make. In other words, it may be the last straw.
In a high-stakes match like Sunday's, it might not be possible to stop the opponent from scoring, especially if you are playing away. So in order for Trabzon to avert a disaster in İstanbul, it should play its game instead of trying to stop Galatasaray from playing.
