15 October 2009 / STAR ERGUN BABAHAN,
Can a nation whose “independent” and “objective” justice system has thus far been unable to play its public role in the murder of a single citizen -- Hrant Dink -- really convince the world that it is able to form a healthy commission on the deaths of -- depending on which allegations you believe -- between 300,000 and 1 million Armenians?
I think not. Because there is a statist view that influences not only Turkey's court system but also its academic system. The state of our universities and our scientists is clear. How is it that a justice system guided by a mentality unable to deal with the death of one person possibly research the deaths of thousands? And just think if the results of the research were clearly not in the interests of the state! With the prevailing mentality, we can trick only ourselves and those like us. As for the rest of the world, we'll make them laugh.
