Jousting with Baykal

15 October 2009 / RADİKAL AKİF BEKİ,
I came to a firm conclusion yesterday [Tuesday] after listening to him during his group meeting. What Deniz Baykal really wants is not to meet with the prime minister but to foment controversy.
The last time we witnessed a face-off between Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Baykal was prior to the 2002 elections on Uğur Dündar's television program “Arena.” Erdoğan walked away from that debate having scored a clear and overwhelming victory. And thanks to that overwhelming victory as seen on the television screens of Turkey, he single-handedly came to power on Nov. 3. From that day onward, Baykal has been pursuing revenge. He takes every chance he gets to invite the prime minister to debate him on live television. But he has never been successful. Which is where, for me, the true matter at hand really begins. I have a strong objection to Baykal using the “democratic initiative” as a way to gain revenge. I find it completely unacceptable.
