14 October 2009 / STAR İBRAHİM KİRAS,
The European Commission's 2009 progress report states that Turkey is investigating a coup attempt for the first time in its history.
Apparently, they've understood the “essence” of the Ergenekon case. The draft report also criticizes the practice of some senior members of the armed forces lending support to Ergenekon suspects in these harsh words, saying the chief of general staff made comments on the Ergenekon case and on the indictment, thus putting the judiciary under pressure and some senior members of the armed forces lend support to military personnel standing trial. Some people wonder why this year's report offers clearer support to the Ergenekon case than previous ones. What is the reason for the EU's change of stance over Ergenekon? Personally, I think those who ask this question need to look in the mirror. For example, take a look at newspapers owned by the Doğan Media Group. Look at what they were saying about the Ergenekon case last year and what they are saying about it today.
