Turkey to switch to standard time

12 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey is set to roll the clocks back by one hour and switch to standard time on Oct. 25 despite the fact that the Ministry of Energy had announced there would be no change after the springtime adjustment and that “summer time'' – daylight saving time -- would remain in use to make better use of daylight.
With the Cabinet having made no final decision as of yet, the people will have to move their clocks back.

Following necessary preparations by the Ministry of Energy, the government should have made the decision and changed relevant regulations to remain in summer time. However, the government issued no final decision and so the clocks will be moved one hour back on Oct. 25 at 4 a.m. The Ministry of Energy predicts that remaining in summer time would help the country save 1,700 billion kWh of electricity, or TL 300 million, an amount equal to the total amount of electricity production of the projected Yusufeli Dam in Artvin.
