4 people caught preparing to attack public buildings

10 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Four people allegedly plotting to attack public buildings were apprehended in an operation carried out by the İstanbul Police Department's counterterrorism unit targeting a terrorist organization, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday.

A statement released by the unit said the four terrorists had come to İstanbul after receiving explosives training abroad.

They were followed upon arrival in Turkey and found to be plotting attacks on the Gülsuyu Police Station and on a military tailoring workshop in İstanbul's Maltepe district, İstanbul Governor Muammer Güler said yesterday in a press conference held at the İstanbul Police Department. The operation also resulted in the seizure of organizational documents and publications.

The statement also noted that the four had participated in violent protests in İstanbul's Ümraniye and Maltepe districts in 2007.

The detainees were referred to İstanbul's Beşiktaş courthouse.
