Not an Armenian but an Azerbaijani initiative

10 October 2009 / AKŞAM DENİZ ÜLKE ARIBOĞAN,
The topic of Turkish-Armenian relations looks set to be one of our most debated subjects in the near future.
All you need to do is take a look at a map to see how significant Turkey's stance is when it comes to Armenia, geopolitically speaking. Turkey's real development is in the Caspian Sea, not Armenia itself, and in doing so, it is attempting to be the main supporter for Azerbaijan opening up to Black Sea littoral countries. This whole initiative is two-dimensional, and in essence, it depends on the coming together of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The unification of this region creates a secure area from the Caspian to the Black Sea, just as Iran's northern initiative puts Turkey into a position it can control. The critical points are to see that the Azerbaijan part is set into motion rapidly and to create a “win-win” model that will benefit all sides. That's how we define strategic depth.
