Greece's new prime minister in Turkey

9 October 2009 / AP, İSTANBUL
Greece's new prime minister has arrived in İstanbul for an informal Balkan countries' ministerial meeting -- his first foreign trip.

George Papandreou, who is also handling foreign affairs, is attending Friday's meeting in his capacity as foreign minister. Papandreou will make his first official foreign visit as prime minister to Cyprus on Oct. 19.

Papandreou championed rapprochement between rivals Greece and Turkey when he served as foreign minister between 1999-2004.

He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu to discuss ties between the neighbors.
