Christofias postpones talks due to health reasons

9 October 2009 / AP WITH TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Greek Cypriot officials said Thursday talks aimed at reunifying the divided island of Cyprus were postponed after Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias experienced muscle spasms in his neck.

Greek Cypriot government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said Thursday's meeting between Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has been called off. Stefanou said Christofias' personal physician recommended “medication, rest and isolation.” He didn't say when the meeting would be rescheduled.

Both leaders are scheduled to meet Wednesday and Thursday of next week as part of year-long talks which started in September 2008 and have so far produced limited progress.

Last month, the two leaders began the second phase of reunification negotiations between the two sides, following a one-week delay due to disputes over a Greek Orthodox pilgrimage.

The first phase of reunification talks, which began in September 2008, ended in August. The two sides have held more than 40 meetings since September 2008.
