Turkey's industrial production continues to decline in August

Turkey's industrial production decreased by 6.3 percent in August 2009 compared to the same month of the previous year, the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) announced on Thursday, when it released its monthly industrial production index.

In industrial sub-sectors, a 0.6 percent increase was seen in mining in August compared to the same month of last year, while in manufacturing, production decreased by 7.2 percent compared to the same period of 2008. Utilities also decreased by 3.6 percent in August 2009 over the same month of 2008.

According to the main industrial grouping classifications, the highest decrease in production was seen in the production of capital goods, a drop of 15.8 percent in August 2009 over August 2008, followed by a 7 percent decrease in the manufacture of intermediate goods compared to the same month of last year.

When the rate of change in sub-groups of manufacturing sector production in August 2009 is compared with August 2008 levels, the highest decrease is seen in the manufacture of non-land conveyances. by 37.0 percent; this is followed by the production of coke and refined petroleum products by 29.8 percent. On the other hand, the highest increase was seen in the manufacture of wood products and cork, by 7.9 percent.
