Turkey hopes Armenia leader attends WCup qualifier

8 October 2009 / AP, ANKARA
Turkey's foreign minister says he hopes Armenia's president will attend next week's World Cup qualifier between Turkey and Armenia without conditions.

Ahmet Davutoğlu's remarks came before this weekend's expected signing of an agreement with Armenia aimed at normalizing ties between the neighbors who do not have diplomatic ties. The agreement is expected to be signed in Zurich, Switzerland on Saturday.

Davutoğlu said Thursday that the announcement regarding details of the agreement with Armenia and participants will be made by Switzerland.

Davutoğlu says Armenian leader Serge Sarkisian should attend the match without any conditions. Sarkisian has said he would go to the Oct. 14 game if there is progress toward opening their joint border.
