During a session on Gaza at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos in January, Erdoğan walked off the stage when a moderator, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, cut off his remarks in response to an impassioned monologue by Israeli President Shimon Peres, who strongly defended Israel's offensive against Gaza, which claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians and injured thousands of others. When Ignatius tried to cut Erdoğan's remarks short, saying it was past time to adjourn for dinner, the Turkish prime minister answered in frustration: “One minute... one minute… one minute… Don't interrupt me. You are not allowing me to speak.”
Inspired by Erdoğan's remarks, Turkish entrepreneur Üzeyir Tari decided open a cafe named “1 Minute” with his Jewish partner Eliyahu Nurieli.
"When I suggested naming our new cafe the '1 Minute Cafe,' my partner really liked it," Tari said.
Tari runs another cafe, The İstanbul Cafe, in Manhattan. But he says the 1 Minute Cafe has been a good commercial investment, adding that he and his partner are planning to open two more 1 Minute Cafes in New York. "We are looking for a place to rent in Times Square," Tari said.
