Boy shoots at school building in Adana

7 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
An 11-year-old took his father's rifle to school on Monday and opened fire on the building, causing no injuries.
H.Y., a seventh grader at Solaklı Elementary School in the southern province of Adana's Yüreğir district, shot at the building from the school's courtyard using a pump-action air rifle reportedly belonging to his father. Since most of the pellets fired were found outside the office of the school's principal, the principal is believed to have been the target of the attack.

The student, who reportedly has psychological problems, has been detained. The head of the Adana branch of the Education Personnel Union (Eğitim-Sen), Güven Boğa, claimed that H.Y. also attempted to stab a student last week. He noted that the boy was taken to a nearby police station, but was released because he was a minor. Officials from Solaklı Elementary School said H.Y. has been aggressive since the start of the new school year in late September and that his family had been informed about the child's behavior.
