The car was attacked in the Depin area of Hakkari yesterday afternoon, killing the officer and severely injuring the other two occupants. The brothers of the slain police officer were hospitalized. The assailants are suspected to be members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The attack came one day after two people were killed on Sunday in an explosion from a landmine believed to have been planted by the PKK in the Beytüşşebap district of the southeastern province of Şırnak.
A minibus driven by Vedat Baylan, 26, hit the landmine in Beytüşşebap. The minibus was reportedly carrying supplies to a military post around Kato Mountains. Baylan and his nephew, Cihat Durmuş, 16, died in the blast. The PKK frequently uses roadside bombs and landmines against Turkish soldiers in the region. In the meantime, 23 people, including eight children, who were killed in a mine explosion in the Midyat district of Mardin in 1993, were commemorated in Midyat yesterday.
