Famous Turkish singer Deniz Seki, who was arrested and imprisoned in İstanbul's Bakırköy Jail on Feb. 24 for suspected cocaine use, was brought to an İstanbul courthouse yesterday for the first hearing in the case against her.
Nineteen other suspects were also tried in the hearing. At the entrance of the courthouse, a smiling Seki asked reporters to pray for her. Seki's lawyer, Naim Karakaya, had written letters to the European Court of Human Rights and the Turkish Prime Ministry's Human Rights Directorate, stating that putting the date of the first hearing 218 days after the date when Seki was imprisoned violated her human rights. After not receiving a reply from either institution, Seki recently wrote a letter to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, appealing for an expedited trial process or clemency.
