Alexiou to open nostalgic Balkans folk dance fest

World-famous Greek singer Haris Alexiou will perform in İzmir this week as part of an international folk dance festival that is being revived more than 70 years after it was first launched in 1935.
Alexiou will perform at 9 p.m. on Friday at the İzmir Fair Area Open-air Theater, where admission will be free of charge. The concert will mark the beginning of the five-day Balkans Folk Dance Festival, in which 400 folk dancers from 10 countries will take part. The event will wrap up on Oct. 7 with a performance by the Anadolu Ateşi (Fire of Anatolia) dance company.
