Poland’s Zanussi to head Golden Orange jury

1 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Krzysztof Zanussi, the well-known Polish filmmaker who was a mentor to such famous directors as Pedro Almodóvar and Krzysztof Kieslowski, will chair the international feature film competition jury at this month's Altın Portakal (Golden Orange) International Film Festival, the organizers announced on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old Zanussi, who earlier this year visited the Turkish capital as a guest of honor of the 20th Ankara International Film Festival, will preside over a four-member panel of judges that will also include veteran Hungarian film director and screenwriter Károly Makk, Napa Sonoma Wine Country Film Festival founder-director Stephen Ashton from the US and filmmaker-screenwriter Canan Gerede and actress Pelin Batu from Turkey, the Antalya Foundation for Culture and Art (AKSAV) said in a written statement.

The jury will choose the best film and best director from among the 12 entrants of the international feature competition at the 46th Golden Orange festival, scheduled for Oct. 10-17 in the Mediterranean city of Antalya.

Bulgarian screenwriter-director Kamen Kalev's first full-length feature, “Eastern Plays”; British director Peter Strickland's “Katalin Varga,” which won a Silver Bear earlier this year at the Berlinale; the Czech film “Anglicke Jahody” (English Strawberries) by Vladimir Drha; “Operacja Dunaj” (Operation Danube), the debut directorial effort by Jacek Glomb; and “Bumaznyi Soldat” (Paper Soldier) by Russia's Alexey German Jr. are among films that will be vying for the best film title. Two Turkish pictures, Pelin Esmer's “11'e 10 Kala” (10 to 11) and Abdullah Oğuz's “Sıcak” (Kismet), are also in the running.

Sixteen new Turkish titles will be running in the festival's national competition, as announced earlier.
