Leukemia patients contract fatal infection due to negligence

30 September 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Seven children with leukemia in Şişli Etfal Teaching and Research Hospital's oncology unit have become infected with a life-threatening bacteria called enterococcus, reportedly spread due to unhealthy conditions at the hospital, a Turkish daily reported yesterday.

While experts say anyone infected with the bacteria must be quarantined, eyewitnesses at the hospital said the first infected child was not taken to a separate room, causing the others to contract the bacteria.

The seven children, aged 2 to 11, reportedly display symptoms of enterococcal infection.

The Health Ministry's Infection Control Committee and Refik Saydam Hıfzısıhha Center (RSHM) officials have been informed of the incident, the daily reported, adding that no precautions had been taken by the hospital against the spread of the bacteria at the time the story went to print.

The hospital administration held a three-hour-long meeting for its staff soon after learning about the bacterial infections, but told the staff that what was discussed at the meeting must remain confidential, according to the daily.
