Recalling that the Ministry of Education held workshops concerning school uniforms in June, Primary Education General Director İbrahim Er told the Anatolia news agency they had prepared a report as a result of the workshops and that they envisage abolishing the nationwide school uniform starting from the 2010-2011 academic year.Er further stressed that the variations in climate throughout Turkey were the most important factor prompting this decision. “The schools will have their own uniforms. The climate is not the same everywhere. One cannot expect a school uniform to meet the needs of students in Antalya, where temperatures are generally high, and in Kars, where temperatures are generally low,” he added.
The director also said they know that some schools are already using their own uniforms and once the uniform regulations are changed such actions would be legitimate. Stating that they will set some general rules governing clothing at schools, Er added: “We will determine guidelines for the uniforms. For example, students cannot wear shirts with shoulder straps or stretch trousers. After the guidelines of the legislation, color, design and other details of individual schools' uniforms will be determined by parent-teacher associations at the schools.”
