Turkish ‘motorcycle rapist’ jailed before, officials say

29 September 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
A 37-year-old Turkish chef, Hamza Keskin, who faces trial for four sexual assaults, three on a British and one on a Finnish woman, was jailed for 10 months last year and is currently free on bail, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday.
Unlike allegations appearing in British tabloid newspapers, claiming Keskin was caught but not imprisoned, Keskin was apprehended  by police soon after a complaint was filed against him when he was riding his motorbike. He was later arrested and jailed for 10 months, according to information provided by officials.

Keskin was dubbed the “motorcycle rapist” by British media for targeting female tourists walking home from clubs and taking them with his motorbike to a forest to rape them. The issue was brought back to the agenda by a British magazine. In one of its recent issues, Take a Break announced news about Keskin on its front page with the headline “Are you the holiday rapist?” and claimed he was still harassing British women.

Muğla Governor Ahmet Altıparmak noted the rape suspect was caught soon and that the article in the British magazine was filled with false information. Stressing that they will send a complaint to the magazine, Altıparmak added: “We are very sensitive about such issues and will continue following this incident closely. We have just launched a telephone line, which can be reached by dialing 179, in order to evaluate tourist complaints in our region soon.”

Keskin, however, said his British girlfriend and other British journalists had trapped him and that he is not guilty of the accusations mentioned in the magazine. “I just divorced my Turkish wife and I have four children. I do not want to talk more about the claims about me,” he said.
