Police officials say Okay, the brother of Republican People's Party (CHP) parliamentary group deputy chairman Hakkı Suha Okay, will be taken to court today.
CHP deputy Okay issued a statement yesterday about the incident, saying, “I don't even want to think about the possibility of him being involved in something like this.”
In the written statement, Okay said, “I have no doubt that the judicial process will bring out all the facts about my brother regarding this event.”
CHP leader Deniz Baykal also spoke about the issue. “The legal process is going on. The probe is under way. We all want the truth to come out on this issue as soon as possible,” he said.
He also said Okay had called him to provide information about the process. “I am not in any position to say anything now. I don't know the details but our determination about the truth coming out. Whatever is needed to be done must be done,” he said Deputy National Police Chief Arslan was taken into custody last week in a massive anti-drug operation in İstanbul. Drug baron Habib Kanat was also among the detainees. The police seized three tons of amphetamine, enough to produce nearly 200 million Captagon pills, worth nearly TL 2 billion. The police chief was, however, released by judge Faik Saban pending trial.
Reports have claimed that the police have footage of Mustafa Fehmi Okay giving orders to workers at an illegal narcotics factory in Tuzla. Okay is accused of being the owner of the plant and Kanat's right-hand man. The owner of an intercity bus company is also among the suspects at large. Chemist Hüseyin Fehmi Işık, also working at the plant, was arrested in last week's operations.
Over the weekend, police staged a number of operations in İstanbul, Ankara and Gaziantep to capture suspects still at large. The police's evidence against Okay is the result of the authorities monitoring his every move for one-and-a-half years.
